The Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a non means tested welfare benefit for children under 16 with an illness or a disability who need help with getting around and/or help with personal care. Children who will turn 16 from 1 October 2013 will be invited to claim Personal Independence Payments, which will gradually replace DLA for adults and young people over 16.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children may help with the extra costs of looking after a child who:

  • is under 16
  • has difficulties walking or needs much more looking after than a child of the same age who does not have a disability

If you/your child are over 16

You will need to apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) when you or your child turn 16.
