SEND funding in mainstream schools: what can you expect your school to provide?

This page explains the funding mainstream schools in the Bi-borough receive to help support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). 

Schools SEND funding explained 

Mainstream schools receive funding for pupils with SEND in 3 parts:

• Core funding for universal provision - funding provided to all pupils

• Funding for targeted provision - funding support that is different to that provided to all pupils because of an evidenced need

• Top-up funding for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans - funding allocated for every pupil with an Educational Health and Care Plan at the school

Provision we expect mainstream schools to fund from their own budgets

As a general principle, the Local Authortiy expects that the great majority of special educational needs will be met by early years providers, mainstream schools and further education colleges from resources already allocated to them. There is a general presumption in favour of inclusive mainstream education for all children and young people in the first instance.

We have produced the following document to explain education funding for early years settings, mainstream schools and general further education colleges for pupils with SEND and to set out the element of provision which the Local Authority expects normally to be met from mainstream schools’ own budgets.
