Play Service as part of the Children's Community Nursing Team

The Community Play Specialists are based at Woodfield Road Medical Centre and are part of the Children’s Community Nursing Team. The service provides community based play to children with complex health needs and is offered to all families within the CLCH Trust, who meet specific eligibility criteria. The services fpr families living in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster City Council, and London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The service provides holistic support for children, young people and families with acute, chronic illnesses and disability. This includes physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social play and support to aid with the child’s development.

The service supports siblings as well as the child needing medical help or interventions.

The sessions aim to provide fun, laughter and enjoyment through play and to teach the child the skills and coping strategies in order to enable them to understand their medical conditions and treatments.

The Play Specialist criteria consists of:

  • Offering and providing home based therapeutic play for children with Complex Health Needs/Medical Needs living in Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster City Council, and London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
  • Providing emotional support for children and their siblings through the combined use of focused developmental and therapeutic play, and to help children prepare for medical/nursing procedures through preparation play.

The Community Play Specialist works in a collaborative manner with the Community Nursing Team and Home Care Support Team, as well as other agencies to ensure a seamless delivery of care to families.

Who is this service available to?

Children and young people from 0 to 18 years old.

When is this service available?

The Play Specialists for the CCN team work Monday to Friday. Morning and after school visits are available.

How do we ensure the quality of this service?

Regular auditing of the service and feedback forms are sent out to parents and children for them to complete.


Team meetings, clinical supervision and regular one to one meetings.


Meetings with parents and assessments are carried out so that the correct level of service can be given to the child and family that need it.
