School Nursing Services

KCW School Health Service consists of School Nurses who are qualified nurses with additional  Specialist Community Public Health (SCPHN)  Qualifications, Community Staff Nurses, A Registered Mental Health Nurse working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Emotional Health & Wellbeing,  Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Specialist Workers and School Health Technicians.

KCW School Health service is commissioned to deliver public health interventions for school-aged children (5-19years) to promote the health and wellbeing of the school aged population:


Universal Screening:

Reception Year including height, weight, hearing and vision testing and review of parental health questionnaire.

National Childhood Measurement Programme: Reception Year and Year 6 

Extended NCMP in five of our schools 


Management of Health Conditions:

To support schools in their duty of the safe management of pupil health conditions in the school setting and contributing to improving school attendance. This includes staff training and education to assist with managing children  and young people with chronic disease, long term conditions and management conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and anaphylaxis.

School Nurses also support schools with the completion of plans for the safe management of young people whose conditions may deteriorate in school and contribution to Education Health and Care plans for children with additional health needs.



Early identification of individual or family problems through the universal programme and school drop ins, with the provision of early help to young people & families including signposting or referral to other services. Safeguarding children and young people who are vulnerable, subject to child protection plans by taking part in the statutory process to ensure their safety and wellbeing.


Promoting good mental health & wellbeing

School nurses are trained to deliver Tier 1 mental health assessment Offer group health promotion sessions to schools in the areas of stress management, relationships, mental health first aid and transitional issues.

Confidential School Nurse drop in service for young people in secondary school

Health promotion, education and training - Advice on behaviour, sleep, bed wetting, healthy lifestyle choices

Emotional health support 

KCW Clinical Nurse Specialist for Emotional Health & Wellbeing provides consultation and support to school nurses in order to signpost pupils to appropriate mental health services when needed. 

Supports school nurses to directly triage / review pupils in schools and make recommendations for ongoing support and or referrals appropriate statutory and non-statutory local services.


Relationships and Sex Education:

Improving school and young people’s knowledge about Relationships and Sex Education, thereby contributing to a reduction in teenage conceptions and the incidence of STI’s. Signposting to appropriate local services for more specialist advice where required.


Support for Children and Young People with Additional Needs 

KCW school nurses provide support for children with special needs, support for young carers and looked after children

KCW school health service has a school nurse dedicated for children and young people directly affected by the Grenfell fire


Transition to School

There is a procedure for direct handing over children from health visiting service  to school nursing service for chilldren with  safeguarding and  medical conditions  conditions and there is an agreement between KCW School Nurses and CLCH  Health Visitors for the transfer of Health Visiting (HV) care & child health records to KCW School Health (CNWL).

This will also include;

  • Children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities,
  • Children in Need,
  • Looked After Children,
  • Safeguarding and 
  • Children with long-term medical conditions

Who is this service available to?

The School Nursing Service is available to all children aged 5-19 years who go to state school in Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster or Hammersmith & Fulham.

When is this service available?

The service is available Mondays to Fridays, 9 am – 5 pm

How do you access this service?

Referral to the School Nursing Services mostly by Schools as well other health service professionals and various multiagency teams e.g. Social Care. Children and young people can also self-refer to our school nursing service.

How do we ensure the quality of this service?

CLCH have a Quality strategy to ensure we offer a service of the highest quality. We have 3 quality campaigns with 3 campaigns:

  1. Patient experience- We actively encourage feedback from our children, young people and family via comment cards, surveys, patient stories, listening events, complaints and compliments. All feedback is reviewed and action plans created to continually improve our service.
  2. Patient safety- We are open and transparent, reporting and investigating all incidents. We embed learning from incidents to prevent them from occurring again with all staff at all levels. Patient safety audits are completed and complete any actions advised.
  3. Clinical Effectiveness- The teams adhere to CLCH clinical practice standards and update these appropriately to NICE guidance. Staff are observed out in practice. Mandatory and relevant clinical training is offered to all staff and recorded and monitored
